Best Practices
Kuttukaran Polytechnic College is known for transforming and empowering students who come from diverse backgrounds ranging from underprivileged sections to affluent ones.
The institute has adopted and incorporated Outcome Based Education (OBE) strategies. even before its counterparts have realised the importance of OBE. The institute has always strived hard to maintain this kind of teaching and learning environment
Apart from the Student Centric Learning environment, some of the unique and best practices followed by the college in the teaching learning process include the Mentoring program for every student of the college, an innovative practice – Employability Bridge Program (E-Bridge) that has been designed and implemented by the college to Bridge the Employability gap existing between academic institutions and the Industry. Other better practices followed include, Department Level Student Associations, clean campus initiative and social responsibility initiatives.
Best practices implemented at KPTC are the following
1. Personalised mentoring
- Program design: For every 20 students, one mentor is allotted who will interact with them once in a week (every Friday) for one hour. Difficulties and problems of the students if any are understood during the interaction and suitable solutions are provided to their problems. Their academic as well as personal problems such as career plans, time management etc are also addressed to in these interactions. Mentoring is conducted during 1.30 pm to 2.20pm on every Friday.
- Evidence of success: Students were more open to share their problems. Teachers were more likely to identify the problems faced by the students.
- Encountered problems: Some students found difficult to open up their problems and they expressed their views on general basis.
2. Kalari Payattu (practice) – Martial Arts
Program design: A traditional combat practices of Kalari for self-defence, competition, physical health, entertainment for girls’ students is started in our KPTC campus from September 6th 2022 onwards with free of cost for every Wednesdays and Thursdays.
- Evidence of Success: All the 35 girls were attended the program regularly. They didn’t feel sleepy during class hours.
- Problems Encountered: Non availability of free hours in the working days.
3. Industrial visit
-
Program design: This program is initiated for all the students of every academic session to sharpen their observation skills and perceptions by utilising their theoretical and practical knowledge. It develops the positive attitude for learning the real life situation. Exposure visits are arranged half yearly by all the departments.
Industrial visits undertaken during 2021-22
(i) Industrial visit to Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) was organised for s3 and s5 EEE students on November 19th 2022.
(ii) Visit to I-Rod technologies Limited, Palarivattom, for S5 Computer Engineering Students on November 6th 2022. - Evidence of success: EEE students submitted their detailed report on how electricity was generated using solar panels, stored in the grid and distributed to various places. Students from Computer Engineering submitted their report on automation.
- Problems encountered: control of students was the small problem for the teachers.
4. Incorporation of ICT at the internal as well as external activities
-
Evidence of Success: All the final year students were successfully presented their seminar by using power point presentation.
The following were the webinars conducted in KPTC during 2021-2022
(i) Institute’s Innovation Counsel (IIC) of Kuttukaran Polytechnic College organised a National webinar on “Traditional Knowledge as an intellectual Property on July 14th 2022.
(ii) Career opportunities after Diploma Courses was organised through online webinar on July 16th 2022.
(iii) IIC of Kuttukaran Polytechnic College organised a National webinar on “Intellectual Property Rights for Start-ups on August 20th 2022. - Problems encountered: Lack of adequate skills at the initial stage for preparation of slides in power point. Loss of face to face contact in webinars.
5. Implementation of value based environmental programs within the college campus and community by the NSS Volunteers of KPTC
6. Faculty Development Program
A platform is created for faculty to get trained with experts from various industries and institutions. The objective is to understand the teaching pedagogy, technology usage and best practices in terms of teaching, learning and research.
Lifehack: Decode Happiness for Success & Fulfilment a three days FDP was conducted from 19/09/2022 to 21/09/2022 in the KPTC seminar hall. Dr.A.Srihari Krishna, Consultant, Rekhi Foundation for Happiness was the subject expert for the FDP.
7. Industry Institute Interaction Programme
8. Institute’s Innovation Council/IEDC
9. Quiz competition and Essay Competition
Special attention for weaker and bright students
Program design:  for weaker students- Groups are formed with 4 to 5 members constitute of one bright student and 4 weaker students After completion of syllabus by the teachers, revision is carried out through the groups. The group members strengthen themselves in learning the subjects and clearing the doubts freely. On trial basis 6 groups were formed in S5 Civil Engineering, for studying Habitat Technology course and revision classes were conducted during November and December of 2022.
Evidence of success: The survey report says that 69% of the respondents reasonably satisfied with the group study.
Problems encountered:At the end of the semester days students were busy in getting no due clearance in their departments.
For bright students: Convocation program is organised every year for the final year students. Prize, certificates and momento are given for best out gone students.
